The Sorbonne is an edifice of the Latin Quarter, in Paris, France, which was the historical house of the former University of Paris. Nowadays, it houses part or all of several higher education and research institutions such as Panthéon-Sorbonne University, Sorbonne Nouvelle University, Paris-Sorbonne University, Paris Descartes University, the École Nationale des Chartes and the École pratique des hautes études.
The name is commonly used to refer to the historic University of Paris or one of its successor institutions, but this is a recent usage. "Sorbonne" has been used with different meanings over the centuries. For information on the historic University of Paris and the present universities which are its successor institutions, or the older Collège de Sorbonne, please refer to the relevant articles.
The name is derived from the Collège de Sorbonne, founded in 1257 by Robert de Sorbon as one of the first significant colleges of the medieval University of Paris. The university predates the college by about a century, and minor colleges had been founded already in the late 12th century. During the 16th century, the Sorbonne became a focal point of the intellectual struggle between Catholics and Protestants. The University served as a major stronghold of Catholic conservative attitudes and, as such, conducted a bitter struggle against King Francis I's policy of relative tolerance towards the French Protestants, except for a brief period in 1533 when the University was placed under Protestant control.
The arts represent an outlet of expression, that is usually influenced by culture and which in turn helps to change culture. As such, the arts are a physical manifestation of the internal creative impulse. Major constituents of the arts include literature – including poetry, novels and short stories, and epics; performing arts – among them music, dance, and theatre; culinary arts such as baking, chocolatiering, and winemaking; media arts like photography and cinematography, and visual arts – including drawing, painting, ceramics, and sculpting. Some art forms combine a visual element with performance (e.g. film) and the written word (e.g. comics).
From prehistoric cave paintings to modern day films, art serves as a vessel for storytelling and conveying mankind's relationship with its environment.
In its most basic abstract definition, art is a documented expression of a sentient being through or on an accessible medium so that anyone can view, hear or experience it. The act itself of producing an expression can also be referred to as a certain art, or as art in general.
Paris (UK: /ˈpærɪs/ PARR-iss; US: i/ˈpɛərɪs/ PAIR-iss; French: [paʁi]) is the capital and most populous city of France. Situated on the Seine River, in the north of the country, it is in the centre of the Île-de-France region, also known as the région parisienne, "Paris Region". The City of Paris has an area of 105 km² (41 mi²) and a population of 2,241,346 (2014 estimate) within its administrative borders essentially unchanged since 1860.
Since the 19th century, the built-up area of Paris has grown far beyond its administrative borders; together with its suburbs, the whole agglomeration has a population of 10,550,350 (Jan. 2012 census).Paris' metropolitan area spans most of the Paris region and has a population of 12,341,418 (Jan. 2012 census), or one-fifth of the population of France. The administrative region covers 12,012 km² (4,638 mi²), with approximately 12 million inhabitants as of 2014, and has its own regional council and president.
Paris was founded in the 3rd century BC by a Celtic people called the Parisii, who gave the city its name. By the 12th century, Paris was the largest city in the western world, a prosperous trading centre, and the home of the University of Paris, one of the first in Europe. In the 18th century, it was the centre stage for the French Revolution, and became an important centre of finance, commerce, fashion, science, and the arts, a position it still retains today.

The Latin Quarter of Paris (French: Quartier latin, IPA: [kaʁtje latɛ̃]) is an area in the 5th and the 6th arrondissements of Paris. It is situated on the left bank of the Seine, around the Sorbonne.
Known for its student life, lively atmosphere and bistros, the Latin Quarter is the home to a number of higher education establishments besides the university itself, such as the Lang–Martinez Psychiatric Hospital, the École des Mines de Paris, Panthéon-Assas University, the Schola Cantorum, and the Jussieu university campus. Other establishments such as the École Polytechnique have relocated in recent times to more spacious settings.
The area gets its name from the Latin language, which was once widely spoken in and around the University since Latin was the language of learning in the Middle Ages in Europe.

A very quick look at the place de la Sorbonne in the Latin Quarter of Paris, France, on a summer afternoon. The people giving free massages just happened to be there at the time, so I showed them, too, but it's more typical to see portrait artists on the plaza, if there are any people doing anything there. It's a nice spot to sit down and relax at a café.
Since the 13th century, the name Sorbonne has conjured up for the whole world the image of one of the most prestigious centres of intelligence and culture, of science and of the arts, of an age-old knowledge that spans the centuries and one that resounds to this day with the promise of excellence. Eight centuries after its foundation, the Sorbonne has become the symbol of all French universities and academies. #Sorbonne #Richelieu
Long time no see subscribers. It's been over a year and a lot has happened. I'm finally a fine arts student at La Sorbonne Panthéon in Paris. Most of what I do is draw and paint, but once in a while I make short art films such as this one. I'm not a professional, obviously, but this short sequence was for a project we had to do correlating the different physical states of water and "corps en résistance" which translates to a body in resistance. Kauany (the beautiful human in the video with me) and I have our own interpretation but we are posting this with no further anlysis for you to be able to think about it for yourselves. Hopefully you get confused and weirded out. Hopefully you feel something. Peace. ~social media instagram: @16.7.92 ~tech stuff camera: samsung NX3000 ...

Pantheon-Sorbonne University (French: Université Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne), also known as Paris 1, is a public research university in Paris, France. It was established in 1971 as one of the main inheritors of the historical University of Paris (La Sorbonne) after the division of the world's second oldest academic institution. Pantheon-Sorbonne's headquarters is located on the Place du Panthéon in the Latin Quarter, an area in the 5th and the 6th arrondissements of Paris.

On your itinerary dedicated to medieval architecture, you walked past two colossal, domed structures, which we will now discuss properly. The first is the Chapelle de la Sorbonne, which is part of the vast and somewhat monotonous university building that was rebuilt at the end of the 19th century. The chapel faces the street, but I suggest admiring it from the vast internal courtyard. Inspired by Roman Baroque style, it was built in the first half of the seventeenth century with the main purpose of creating a mausoleum around the tomb of Cardinal Richelieu. The great protagonist of European politics died seven years after the church's creation, which can boast being the first sacred building in Paris with a masonry dome. The chapel's interior was plundered during the French Revolution, but...

A visit to the rue Cler in Paris, a pedestrian market street in the Seventh district of Paris that is famous mainly because of Rick Steves, an American travel writer who sings its praises in his travel guides. There are many market streets in Paris, including streets far more interesting than this one, but this one gets the most press, so I've made a short video about it. For a look at a market street in Paris that makes the rue Cler look comatose, see this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4L_qTTLvxKM [Music credit: Jeremy Sherman (PRS), courtesy of Lynne Publishing AS (PRS)]

The area of the left bank is possibly the most stimulating in Paris. The Latin Quarter takes its name from the Latin spoken by students of the Sorbonne until the Revolution. The streets continue to buzz with bookshops, cafes, and jazz clubs. The Cathedral of Notre-Dame is the "heart" of Paris, both geographically and spiritually. It contains France's largest organ and it was the monument that inspired the "Huntchback of Notre-Dame" by Victor Hugo. This area is a must see when you are in Paris! The historic Latin Quarter remains today's center of Parisian student life. It's a vibrant patchwork of bookstores, cafes and restaurant. The neighborhood's youthful energy emanates from the Sorbonne, Paris' oldest university. If you enjoy seeing famous and beautiful places or if you are interested in classic architecture, you should add the Sorbonne to your to see list while in Paris. The university takes its name from Robert de Sorbon who created a college in 1253 that accepted students based solely on their intellectual excellence. This famous Left Bank neighborhood, spoke only Latin to their professors until the French Revolution. The 17th century brought change to the school. In an effort to bring new life to the old buildings, Cardinal Duc de Richelieu appointed architects to update ...
